Sleep and Reading
I used to fall asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow. And I’d sleep all night waking refreshed at 5:30-6:00AM. This is if anyone is refreshed at that hour. Now I toss and turn and it takes me a while to fall asleep. Sometimes, it takes a good hour and a half before I nod out. Am I becoming an insomniac like my grandmother? Well a recent article in Scientific American Mind, tells about new research about IPads and sleep. If you use it at the maximum brighteness at bedtime, it can suppress the normal release of melatonin which tells your body that it is night and helps to make you sleepy. The dose of brightness is important. So my Kindle may be contributing to my sleep problems. And I just thought it was old age! The article suggested switching to a good old fashioned book at bedtime. I’m going to do it!
